London-based edtech company MyTutor has acquired Fire Tech, an education platform that teaches kids tech skills like coding.

The acquisition will see MyTutor add extra-curricular lessons in areas such as programming, AI, game design and digital media production to its one-on-one tutoring platform.

Fire Tech, also based in London, has provided over 80,000 learning experiences to young people around the world. Founded by Jill Hodges, the edtech company aims to help children aged 8 to 17 develop skills in communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking.

The two companies did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement. The acquisition comes four months after MyTutor secured £15m in a funding round led by SEEK Investments.

Bertie Hubbard, CEO and Co-Founder of MyTutor, said: “I see the impact of the digital skills gap firsthand as an employer, which is why I’m so thrilled to have found a team that has created such engaging, high-level impact technology courses – and why I am so keen to offer this to our clients.”

He added: “We also know that access to a high level of digital learning is limited across the UK, and so we are delighted to put digital skills at the heart of a wider program strategy for the parents and school partners we work with across the country to make access to life-changing learning accessible to all.

MyTutor offers courses through a network of over 20,000 carefully selected experts from top UK universities.

The company claims to have supported more than 1,000 secondary schools, hundreds of thousands of parents and delivered more than two million lessons.

Demand for edtech platforms has exploded, with the Covid-19 pandemic leading to an increase in the use of distance learning tools. MyTutor says its platform has seen 170% demand over the past two years due to school closures.

100% (16 of 16; 40+ currently enrolled) of Rocket’s Bootcamp graduates got a job as a software engineer within three months of graduation, and all have changed careers.

Many of Rocket’s students come from top companies and universities, but several also come from less traditional backgrounds and are successful nonetheless.

An example of a graduate who has succeeded despite a less traditional path is Effy from FTBC3 (Full-Time Bootcamp Batch 3).

Effy’s highest formal education is high school, and he was a delivery driver, personal trainer, and rock climbing instructor before joining Rocket. He finally got his software engineering degree in two weeks.

There are several examples like that of Effy, like Michelle (FTBC2), who was a horse trainer and now a software engineer at Rocket; and Perry (FTBC0), who was chief and now software engineer at Glints.

How far have you grown and taken the start-up in two years?

Rocket has taught over 700 students in our free Coding Basics course and over 60 students in our paid Software Engineering Bootcamp (40+ currently enrolled) – 90 percent of students enrolled in 2021.

We currently have 10 full-time employees and approximately 20 part-time employees and contractors. These are two full-time employees (Akira and me) from mid-2020 to mid-2021, and one full-time employee (me) for about nine months before that.

Rocket has 50 Angel Investors and VCs who invested a total of US $ 1.1 million (S $ 1.5 million) in Rocket in August 2021. I am delighted to partner with these prolific investors, entrepreneurs and engineers. to provide the best opportunities for students and alumni of Rocket.

“Coding is only for A-level students.”

You mentioned that the pandemic was actually a great time to move the business forward as there was a shortage of qualified software engineers. How? ‘Or’ What?

In recent years, there has been a dearth of good software engineers everywhere.

The Covid-19 has exacerbated this situation due to the switch to online services, which require the development of software engineers. Companies are more eager than ever to hire great software engineers, regardless of their background.

Covid-19 has accelerated the decline of many traditional industries, leading more to seek careers in growing industries such as technology, where software engineering is the most in-demand job.

The pandemic has forced many people to do more things online, which has made them feel more comfortable learning online at a school like Rocket Academy.

Mentally, it was exhausting for a lot of people. Despite how well things have gone professionally, how have you dealt with Covid-19 personally?

I am grateful to Singapore, especially our frontline workers, for keeping everyone safe during the pandemic. Singapore has had few deaths from Covid and few (to my knowledge) horror stories of health services not being available to those in need.

During Circuit Breaker in Singapore, I took many walks in the park. Since then, I have diligently ensured that I maintain my personal health and spend time with my family.

NS seems to have had a life-changing impact, especially since you didn’t grow up in Singapore. What are sustainable take out, Singaporean compatriot Son?

I was an infantry officer and after OCS I served as a platoon commander at RSTA Company 2SIB HQ. As someone who did not grow up in Singapore (parents worked in Hong Kong and the United States), my experience in Nova Scotia inspired me deeply.

NS led me to describe myself as “from Singapore” and not “from Hong Kong” to anyone I met afterwards. Although I went to Stanford after Nova Scotia, I knew I wanted to return to Singapore to live and work.

I met some of my best friends during NS. These friends have supported and supported me for the decade since we served together, and I couldn’t be more grateful for them. Some of them even invested in Rocket Academy during Rocket’s fundraiser in August!

Perhaps more importantly, NS and most notably, survival training as an infantry reconnaissance officer made me appreciate basic needs, motivating me to help others meet basic needs. in my career. I have only worked in health and education companies since I graduated from Stanford.

The Vodafone Ghana Foundation, the charitable arm of Vodafone Ghana, has trained eighty (80) people with disabilities (PWD) in coding and robotics to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2021.

The event was part of the Foundation’s monthly “Birthday Stars” initiative which aims to run monthly projects with birthday celebrants to mark selected international days, in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals.

Vodafone Ghana Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Patricia Obo-Nai, who honored the occasion as a birthday celebrant in December, highlighted Vodafone’s contribution to empowering people with disabilities.

“A few years ago, as an organization, we chose to employ people who can sign up to help a percentage of our customers who don’t have access to our call center. I am very happy with the training session and what I saw today. This is my first time attending the goalball game and we will do everything we can to support you, ”she said.

Participants participated in several activities covered by coding, robotic studies, and website development. In addition, the birthday celebrants of December; Ghanaian comedy actors Clemento Surez and OB Amponsah engaged them in an indoor game, the Paralympic goal ball.

Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (Digi) and its Future Skills For All (FS4A) program partners provide coding training for teachers at the Malaysian Federation of the Deaf (MFD).

Digi distributed sets of micro: bits to MFDs to facilitate training.

This pilot initiative helps the telecommunications company to better assess the needs of the deaf community and to develop a more inclusive range of existing FS4A modules.

FS4A is a free educational platform that makes learning digital skills accessible to schoolchildren.

To begin with, sign language interpretation will be integrated into basic computer video modules and possibly extended to other modules gradually.

Some of the coding terms that are new to the Deaf community will be creatively interpreted outside of the spelling of the terms.

Digi’s chief sustainability officer, Philip Ling, said the collaboration is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing the inequalities facing underserved communities.

WhiteHat Jr announced Thursday that it has collaborated with Microsoft India to provide students and teachers with access to personalized and immersive learning experiences with Minecraft.
