Atlassian expands its product portfolio with new coding and data analysis tools

Atlassian Corp. PLC today introduced new products designed to help companies more effectively manage application development projects and other business initiatives.

Atlassian, a publicly traded company, is a leading developer tools provider. The Company’s products are used by software teams to store application code, fix bugs and perform related tasks. Some Atlassian products, such as its Trello project management app, are also widely used outside of the developer ecosystem.


Enterprise applications often include more than dozens of components, some of which are created in-house by a company’s developers while others are provided by vendors or from the open source ecosystem. The first new product introduced today by Atlassian, called Compass, aims to help software teams manage the components of an application more easily.

Compass displays all modules that make up a workload in a centralized list. Developers can click on a module’s entry to view its source code, as well as access documentation explaining how the code works.

According to Atlassian, Compass is able to highlight how the components of an application interact. The tool flags instances where a technical issue in one module may also cause a different component to malfunction.

This information is useful for troubleshooting purposes. A developer troubleshooting an application module can consult Compass to determine if the problem may be caused by a different component of the same application.

Development teams can optionally configure Compass to analyze their code for technical issues. The tool is capable of automatically checking an application’s components for cybersecurity vulnerabilities, regulatory compliance issues, and other flaws. Software teams can further customize Compass by configuring its interface to display data from external sources, such as application performance information collected by a third-party monitoring tool.


Although best known as a provider of development tools, Atlassian also has a large installed base of professional users. The company’s Trello project management app, for example, is used not only by developers, but also by sales, marketing, and customer support departments.

Atlassian expanded its collection of features for business users today with the introduction of a tool called Atlas. Company managers can use Atlas to share information about business projects with workers. The tool helps create a web page that outlines a project’s business goals, contains a description of the tasks involved, and provides access to relevant files such as sales forecasts.

Data analysis

Compass and Atlas debuted today alongside two data analytics tools designed to help businesses extract insights from the information they store in Atlassian’s apps. Atlassian’s Jira Software app, for example, is used by developers to share information about outstanding software bugs that need fixing. This data can be analyzed to find ways to improve a company’s development workflow.

The first new analytics tool debuting today is Atlassian Data Lake. It allows companies to export Atlassian product information to external business intelligence software for analysis. At launch, Atlassian Data Lake provides access to information from Jira Software and Jira Service Management, an application that helps companies process support requests.

Businesses can also analyze their data using Atlassian Analytics, another newly introduced tool. The tool provides a collection of pre-packaged dashboards that can be used to track key metrics of a software development initiative, such as the frequency of releasing new features. Atlassian Analytics also offers the ability to create custom dashboards using a low-code editor or by writing SQL code.

To support more advanced use cases, Atlassian Analytics provides the ability to blend data from external sources. A company can, for example, combine information about feature release frequency with revenue growth statistics pulled from its data warehouse. Business users could then run analyzes to determine how the release of new features influences revenue growth.
